Towards the Paremiological Optimum of Czech
ABSTRACT (en)
The article addresses the issue of defining a paremiological optimum for contemporary written Czech on the basis of corpus data. While paremiological research has traditionally relied on questionnaire-based methods aimed at identifying proverb knowledge among native speakers, this study adopts a corpus-oriented approach focusing on the actual use of proverbs in written texts. The analysis is based on a large, representative set of Czech corpora drawn from fiction, journalism, and academic and professional writing of the last three decades. The study builds on the annotation of proverbs in the LEMUR database of multiword expressions and discusses theoretical and methodological problems related to the delimitation of proverbs as a category, the treatment of variants, and frequency-based selection. To avoid genre bias caused by the dominance of journalistic texts in large corpora, normalized frequencies and genre comparison were applied. The resulting paremiological optimum consists of 189 proverb lemmas occurring across all examined text types. The findings contribute to the ongoing discussion of paremiological minima in Czech, provide empirical evidence for changes in proverb usage over time, and offer a corpus-based perspective relevant both for lexicographic description and for the selection of proverbs in language teaching.
