Cross-linguistic and Cross-cultural Analysis of the Idioms strýček z Ameriky and zio d’America

Drawing on a cognitive and culturally oriented approach offered by Conventional Figurative Language Theory (CFLT), this paper compares idioms in Czech and Italian. Using the expressions strýček z Ameriky and zio d’America as examples, it is shown that a comparison based only on traditional, noncontextual equivalence — which focuses only on denotative meaning and formal features — may not be sufficient to identify potential differences in usage. Data extracted from the Czech online corpus (csTenTen23) and the Italian corpus (itTenTen20), queried through the corpus manager Sketch Engine, provide the basis for a holistic description of the two idioms, which takes into consideration both quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results highlight the fact that even idioms that share the same origin and which might intuitively be considered fully equivalent can exhibit differences both in usage and across other linguistic levels.
