Slovak Toponyms and Their Translation into Spanish
ABSTRACT (en)
This article aims to map the use of Slovak toponyms in Spanish. We identify and then focus on those Spanish equivalents where they differ significantly from the original or where there are several possible equivalents. For the purpose of our search, we analyze travel guidebooks about Slovakia that are currently available in Spain, as well as Wikipedia, the most common source of information on the internet, and Google Maps, the most widely used navigation and mapping application. In our analysis, we focus on selected translation procedures. We identify three of them, firstly borrowing without modification (other than omission of diacritical marks), secondly modified borrowing, which is minimal, and thirdly translation of toponyms. The third procedure is most typically found in cases of multi-word toponyms with common nominal and adjectival components. In Spanish, there are several possible solutions with different structures, which is the reason for the emergence of different equivalents in different sources. Finally, we focus on individual types of toponyms that either represent the greatest differences from Slovak or constitute the greatest challenge in finding a functional equivalent.
