Conditional Meaning and Langacker’s Dynamic Evolutionary Model: A Cognitive Analysis of the Hypothetical, Temporal, and Congruential Functions of the Czech, Spanish, and English Conditional

The paper deals with the issue of conditional meaning. It addresses the basic and most frequent functions of the Czech, English, and Spanish conditional—the temporal function (English and Span ish conditional), the hypothetical function (common to all three languages), and the congruential function (the Czech conditional). The approach is based on cognitive grammar and on Langacker’s Dynamic Evolutionary Model, within the framework of which it attempts to find a place for all three interpretations mentioned above. At the same time, it defines the basic function of conditional meaning, which is common to all languages.
