 ABSTRACT (en)

Following recent investigations of the semantic-pragmatic basis of function words in the Central European region, we attempt to apply these findings to a comparative linguistic analysis of Up per Sorbian hewak ‘otherwise’ for the purposes of the emerging Upper Sorbian-Czech dictionary. In so doing, we rely on corpus data and data in grammars and dictionaries of Sorbian and German (as a language of intensive contact), supplemented by solutions in grammars of Czech (as the tar get language). Interlingual comparison allows us to identify not only differences and similarities in language use, but also terminological differences found in various grammatical approaches, which, however, face shared problems. Our goal is to find a suitable user-friendly lexicographic solution for this word and for other indeclinable multifunctional expressions.
